704 miles of my own

I started riding my bike in early July and have logged a little over 700 miles since then. The goal was (and is) to get into better shape and drop a few pounds. So far, I have gotten into better shape, but haven't dropped many pounds. As in, I've lost 4.5 pound after riding 700 miles. While that kinda pisses me off, I know there are other factors involved like diet and so forth.

Anyway, Just thought I'd pop in the chart that I've created from my bike log data. I'm pretty pleased with the nice stair step of the number of miles logged each month, even though the number of rides each month has dropped slightly because I'm doing longer rides. I just home from a 20 mile ride home from work that I'm trying to get done twice a week until the time changes and makes that impossible. When I first started, that 20 mile ride home was my first major goal.

I know I've got a lot to learn on this stuff, but I'm enjoying getting out there and Damon's even gotten in on the act since we got him one of those tag along bikes that attaches to mine. He especially likes the 20mph downhill bits that we get from time to time.

21,000 miles on a bike

I've logged about 650 miles on my bike since the beginning of July. This guy did 21,000 miles in a trip from California to the southern tip of South America, then across the US from New York back to California.

Biking along the Santa Ana River

For our Father's Day time today, Damon and I rode our bikes from Moon Park in Costa Mesa, down to Vista Park, along the Santa Ana River trail. Marnia met us with lunch, which was a good thing as Damon was getting a little tired as we neared our destination.

Looks like the GPS on my iPhone has some accuracy challenges. The 3mph speed looks about right. Not sure where the 93mph reading came from. That might be some sort of land-speed record on a cruiser bike.

Bike ride at Fairview Park

Damon and I went for a bike ride today at Fairview park in Costa Mesa. We even went over the railroad-style bridge to "Goat Hill Junction" where the little trains run and rode around in there for a while.

I turned on GPS logging on my Phone and created the track log below.

Joe and China

Got an email from Tim yesterday that Eric's dog Joe passed away recently and in the email he asked if I still had the video of Joe and China from when Joe was a puppy. I was able to find it, and the video is below. This was taken in 2001 or 2002 when Joe was about 7 weeks old.

It was nice to hear Judy's voice as well. I was kind of bummed that we can't see her in the video, but I'm sure that's the way she'd like it. It's all about the dogs, isn't it?

Playing Monkey

I looked out of the garage yesterday, and there was Damon, he had the jog stroller parked under the tree and was standing on it to try and climb up into the tree. It was moving around a fair bit since he hadn't locked the wheels, but he almost had it.

Daddy: "Damon! What are you doing?"
Damon: "Playing monkey. I want to get up into the tree"

I'd seen him trying to climb up the trunk several times already, and I guess he'd decided that he needed a leg up.

We put the stroller back, and I gave him that one little boost that he needed and he climbed up into the tree. He even climbed down. The second and third times up the tree, he was able to do it much more quickly, but did get himself wedged in and had to be "rescued".

The first thing he wanted to do when Mommy got home was run outside (in the rain) to show her how he could climb the tree and after that first little bit of help from me, he scampered up it like he was born to it.

Any bets on how long the "you can only climb the tree when Mommy or Daddy are helping you" rule will hold?
